Howdy.
Lots of things happening around here. I have some interesting updates to share and cool work in progress pictures.

I have to admit, it has been a bit of a weird week. I have been getting over a chest infection, not like a chest burster infection, but still a major buzzkill.

However, I have made a lot of progress on my painting projects. At the moment I am working on a Khorne Lord of Skulls and hell Brute commission for a friend of mine, which are both way past over due, by like a year over due. I am also working on a Bolt Action German Army, a Warmachine Cryx army and a Flames of War German Army.

So first, I post a couple pictures last week on the Lord of Skulls. One of the things that has been holding me up is getting a really good bright red to make the Lord of Skulls really stand out. Most conventional comments are to use GW this or that. My biggest problem with GWs red are they tend to be very orange looking once they dry. However, I have experimented with a brand of paint called Wicked and they have a red that is really saturated and is very much red.

I used the same red on the hell brute as well. I have to admit, I am really please with this color. Its supposed to be airbrush ready, but I used the thinner recommended with it and it flowed through my airbrush pretty quickly and easily without any clogging or splatter.

I am really looking forward to finishing up the airbrush work and getting to the details on these models. They are going to look amazing when they are completed.

The Bolt Action models are a Stug and a Puma. Both Models are from Warlord games and overall are pretty good. My only gripe is the white metal Warlord games uses for their models is very hard. Its great for holding detail, but I have serious worn out a drill bit trying to pin the parts together. Its also rather brittle, with both the front fender and barrel for my Puma snapping from minor handling to straighten them out to fit. If you notice the Puma has a small piece of brass tubing instead of a cast barrel. Its still looks alright and a decent paint job with hide it away with casual observation.

I have been using a technique on most of my airbrushing called light modulation. The basic idea is that you emphasize the lighting to create lights and shadow on the model that may not be exactly realistic. I was a little skeptical at first using this, but I must admit, the gradation of color really does make the model stand out and when the other details of line shading, camouflage and weathering detail and the models are amazing to look at.

Lastly I have a couple of Warmachine Cryx bone jacks. I think these little are some of the neatest looking models in the whole army. They are like robotics chickens from hell and have come to kick butt and chew gum. The colors on them are kind of off, they are more of a blue green than the dark blue that shows up on my screen and photo editing doesn't seem to want to correct it, even adjusting for green and blue. Either way, I still think they turned out pretty well and am looking forward to putting them on the table.

So in closing

I want to post a link to another band I like. Most of what I like is hard rock and heavy metal, although the current deep guttural doesn't do much for me. Sounds like a guy who is constipated and trying to retch while working at a demolition site.

The band is called Amaranthe. 3 lead singers good drums and has a hard edge to it, but is still musical. It kind of reminds me of some of the rhythms Rob Zombie would come with which were good and catchy. Plus some decent MMA props in the video which I also like.

Until next week!Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-45124470037511272972015-08-03T14:15:00.003-05:002015-08-03T14:15:53.107-05:00Howdy. Seems there is a lot going on just when I have time to post.

Hello, been a long time.

But with life, the kids and wife, and all that goes with having a home full of teenagers, some things just don't get the attention they deserve.

As I am sure you are aware, this blog seems to have been one of those things. And you would be correct.

I have not giving up wargaming and painting, I just have not had the same time I used to. I sure all of you can relate to real life getting in the way for free time.

I would like to start by briefly discussing the new Warhammer Age of Sigmar. What are my thoughts and impressions of the game, how do the new minis look and how would I paint them. Which armies do I plan to work on? What I think is I don't think anything about. I am not even bothering to entertain trying it out. My thought about it is GW pretty much is a non-factor in my day to day gaming life. I still have a lot of 40K stuff, but I have done a decent job of clearing out my fantasy stuff, since I have not played since early 7th edition. In part with this is I have clearly gone for several years without even playing a game of WHFB, so at this point, why throw good money after bad?? Not that 40k is all that great now-a-days either, but I have a great set of gaming buddies and we have some incredible Apoc games, so the 40k stuff stays, the rest... I plan to keep my elves to play Kings of War, and probably what is left of my Skaven and undead. Rest is going to be traded or sold on an online market or maybe they will end up in China for repaint and resale. Who knows, but I have sold a lot of things to people in China. Weird...

One of my better trades is I managed to do a pretty decent trade at a local bitz bazaar at a local store, unloaded a lot of old Empire models, Dwarves I have had for almost 20 years and only managed to prime some of them, and a small skaven army along with lots of fanatsy odds and ends and came home with a significant increase in my wallet and a new ultramarines army.

Its kind of weird really because I used to love Ultramarines way back in the day, think early nineties. But I got a divorce from my first wife and I kind of related Ultramarines to that time in my life and really had no desire to have anything to do with them. In fact, I stripped and repainted them as dark angels, sold it and then did another Dark Angels army, sold that one at a tournament, then did a third Dark Angels army, and sold that one as well. Yes, I do have enough marines and terminators to do a fourth Dark Angels army, but I have kind of held off. I think I might want to hold on to this last set of models.

But I digress...So I now have a pretty well done Ultramarine army, and with a few more models it is pretty well rounded out. The following is the actual army from a post online.

On my painting desk right now is a commission I am long past due on, a Lord of Skulls, and I also have a mix of Bolt Action Germans and some Warmachine Cryx models.

I am going to make a serious effort to post at least once a week on my progress with various things, maybe not all hobby related, but at least interesting to me.

One of those other interests in music. I love music and its still a big part of my life. My kids talked me into taking them to Warptour over the last few years. One of the bands I really liked is Icon for Hire. They are kind of a pop punk rock band with a unique style. This picture is from last years Warp Tour. Cool show, excellent band.

Howdy everyone. So I am going to get back into the swing of things here. I can hardly believe its been almost a year since my last update. Way too long.

I've got a lot of things to share over the next few posts so I will start with the most recent.

My dark eldar continue to progress, little by little. I hab=ve been doing a lot of flames of war of late, and I have a few pictures I will share in a later post.

For right now, I was asked a question about my Dark eldar and the colors I used. I used several colors to get a 5 color combination.

my darkest color was a mix of scorched brown and dark flesh to get a darker reddish brown.
next was a mix of my dark color mixed 50-50 with Tau Sept Ochre.
The base color was Tau Sept Ochre
The first highlight was a mix of Tau Sept Ochre mixed 50-50 with Vallejo Iraqui Sand
and the last highight was Vallejo Iraqui Sand

All of the colors were applied with an airbrush on the vehicles. They were painted by hand on the infantry.

I have also started work on a Tyranid army. I have a couple of early paint scheme models that I am going to expand on for all my models.

I am going to call it Hive Fleet Mermaid. Not the most intimidating of names, but my oldest daughter loves mermaids and it makes her happy. Plus I like the aquatic look I have worked up for them.

Also I have been working on a lot of Flames of War armies over the last several months. I guess I was feeling the same thing as a lot of the 40k players and that 6th edition just isn't that good of a rule set. I still enjoying playing to a certain extent, but I just don't feel like it is really challenging me as a player in the competitive player world.

Don't get me wrong, I am far from the most WAAC kind of player, and I'm not a fluff bunny either, but it seems so much of the game depends on who goes first and certain power builds. I know, what else is new with this or any previous edition. What I am saying is I used to enjoy a more close or competitive game whereas now it seems like there are drastic swings one way or the other and that the game tends to be decided by turn 2 or 3.

So I am building Apoc armies, where lots of things more or less balance out. Not everything, but most things. Anyhoo, my point is not to get into a huge flame war with anyone, just express my feelings about things as they are right now.

My current love for rules is Flames of War, I have payed it off and on for years, but have really gotten into it over the last year and the more I play, the more I enjoy it.

Down here in Houston we are starting a late war league and I will be playing a late war Volksgrenadier list from the "Nuts" book. I have a couple of my winter jagdtigers that are still being worked on. Let me know what you think.

Howdy.

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to travel to Austin to compete in the X-wing regional tournament. It was a decently attended tourney, given the new-ness of the game and the difficulty in getting any of the model ships. But...

What a great tournament! I had an absolute blast every game. One of the things I really like about X-wing is the simple elegance of the rules. There really are not that many rules, and the rules as they are are clearly written out with great examples. Most of the game is the customization of the ships and the players skill.

In short, an X wing is an X wing and a TIE is a TIE. But the pilots and the upgrades you give them as well as how well they all work together is where the game really shines. There aren't any really bad builds, just some that are not super optimal. The thing is, what it comes down to is how you play your ships. Do you want to try and over run your opponent with a mass of tie fighters or do you want to run an elite Rebel squadron? Truth is there is not one list that is better than another, just how you play it.

For my part, I ran an elite rebel list consisting of 3 ships. Wedge Antilles, Dutch Vander and Biggs Darklighter. 2 X-Wing fighters and a single Y-Wing. with a few upgrades and astromech droids, I made a pretty tough list that had my opponents having fits the way I played it.

Wedge is flat out a beast. His ability is to remove defense dice from his target, making it much more likely he will cause damage or destroy a ship. Dutch Vander hands out free target locks if he gets one himself. A target lock allows you to re-roll any of your attack dice if you choose. Guess who got the free target lock.

And Biggs. His ability is if he is range 1 of a friendly ship, then you have to shoot him if you are able to. Which seems initially like a kind of horrible ability having the "kick me" sign on your back, but what it does is forces your opponent to shoot him, leaving the rest of your ships untouched and free to focus on pure offense. There are certain pilot skills and upgrades you can buy that improve the offensive ability of pilots, so I loaded up on those for Wedge and Dutch, and left Darklighter to be a whipping boy in space. Its a nice perk to not to have to worry about being shot atand having your "big gun" taken out in the first engagement.

Maneuvering with this list is a real pain, because if one of these other 2 guys gets too far from Bigss, they're toast. Every ship that can will shoot these down as fast as possible. And if you happen to overlap, then you don't get to use any actions which really restricts the pilots ability to do what you want them to do.

Any way, for the tournament, I faced 3 opponents, and with some luck on my matchups I did very well. Most of my opponents had equal to or fewer ships than me.

Game 1. vs. Chumbalaya.
I faced a Firespray ( Think Slave 1) a TIE interceptor and 4 TIE fighters. The game started off rather slowly with the TIEs waiting to close till the TIE interceptor and Firespray got in close, but I moved in quickly and blew 2 of the TIEs away in the first 2 turns. The some careful maneuver and managed to get rid of the Tie Interceptor. The Firespray focussed on Biggs, and did finally blow him up, but was itself blwn up n the same turn. With 2 TIEs left, it was simple to have wedge and Dutch finish them off.
Win for me.

Game 2. vs Tom
Tom ran 3 Y wings, and did a marvelous job of staying close together and working as a squadron, however, I played the range game and stayed out of his Ion canon range most of them game and whittled him down fairly quickly. Biggs survived this game, but he did get Ionized a few times.
Win for me.

Game 3 vs Cyberwolfe.
He ran a wedge and Millennium Falcon list. This game was kind of funny in that we both flew around the board in circles looking for the opportunity to turn in and start shooting. Cyberwolfe played well, but the Falcon got a little too much separation from the Falcon, so I moved all 3 of my fighters in. Biggs took some shots, but the return fire from my Wedge and Dutch Ionized him, and his Wedge was gone the next turn.
At this point my maneuvering got really bad and biggs got separated form the rest of my ships and it was open season on Dutch, who took several hits and lost of few shields, but managed to get in range 1 for his own shots, removing 3 sheilds from the Falcon and Wedge Biggs removed the other 5. After that it was nothing more than chasing the Falcon down and blowing it up.
Win for me.

All of my opponents were great guys, and one of the things I really liked was the laid back feel for the tournament. I'm not stranger to competitive play, but this was one of those "just plain fun" tourneys for both sides. No real arguments, few questions, just simple game play with some really great guys.

I took 1st place and won the regional tournament and got my ticket to the world championship in November. Not sure I will go, Minnesota is a long way from Texas, and its really cold.

All that aside, I really like this game and cannot recommend it enough. I am able to play with my 7 year old daughter as well as grown opponents and have a great time each game.

Howdy. I would like to present my Desert Afrika Korps.

So with a Flames of War Escalation League coming to a close, I have finally managed to get an army completed. What typically happens is I get an army near to completion and some one makes an offer to buy it that is too good to pass up.

That has not been the case here, and I am actually quite happy to have an army done to completion. There are other aspects that I intend to add, but for now I have a force I can put on the table at a moments notice. Hooray!!

Here they are and ready for review. Feel free to chime in and comment.

So there it is. I have several other projects going on right now, and would be doing much better of I could shake this cold I have, but I am off for the next couple of weeks and hopefully can get some progress on a couple of things.

Howdy. So my friend Honda and I got together for our annual 40K game. We call it our annual game because it usually what we have time for in between our two schedules.

Honda was playing his Black Templars and was seeking to purge planet Copperwood ( our local GW store) of the Xenos scum that were known to scurry about there.

Little did the followers of the Zombie Lord of the Imperium know that these particular xenos are fond of their prey coming to our hunting grounds of their own free will. You can bring a 8 foot tall superman to a knife fight, Dark Eldar bring guns. The Black Halo was up to the challenge.

Honda won the initiative and choose to deploy first. I can't remember the name of the scenario, but we played long table with short table player edges.

Honda elected to deploy in an balanced set up. He had 2 combat squads in the building on the left, one in the top of the bastion on the right, and a big block of terminators behind the bastion. In the middle he had another combat squad behind a stock Landraider, flanked by 2 Land Raider Crusaders and a Vindicator in the back.

I choose to deploy anti infantry venoms to my left side, with the 3 Ravagers using cover and staying as far out of reach to his las cannons as possible. My Succubus HQ and Haemii deployed in a raider with the wyches on on the opposite side of the ravagers.

I failed to seize the initiative and the game began in broad daylight. Honda moved his LR Crusader behind cover and moved his Land Raider forward to get in range Honda opened up with his las cannons on my closest ravager. I am not sure what kind of ballistic training templars are using these days, but my ravager came away unscathed.

My turn 1. I shifted my venoms to the right side of the board and my Ravagers moved forward in range of the Land raider. The Wych Raider moved forward. Every lance I had in range opened up on the land raider. For all my effort I managed to inflict one hull point of damage. Hmmm. The venoms however did a fantastic job of removing both forard combat squads of templars, removing 2 of the las cannons threatening my precious paper mache armored transports.

My Movement.

The Black and Gold dish out some pain!

Top of turn two. Here is where Honda reminded my I had to have his entire forced wiped out or it was a moral victory for him. He moved his terminators up and opened up on one of my ravagers, blowing it to smithereens. One of the terminators with a Cyclone Missle launcher glanced one of my venoms.

For my part on turn two, I redirected my transports back towards the bastion and moving forward to put as many models in range as possible.

The raider and the Ravagers finished off the Land Raider and wiping out all of the Bastion Templars and also killing 2 of the terminators, including one of the 2 cyclone missile launchers.

At this point we began to check possibilites. Honda was down to 2 LR Crusaders and a Vindicator, which could not touch any of my vehicles due to my mobility and nightshields. He had one 5 man unit of marines equipped with a heavy bolter and a flamer. And he had 6 terminators and a Chalpin HQ I think who had taken a wound. I was down 1 Ravager.

At this point it was kind of like this.

At this point he conceded, seeing no possible way to overcome my venoms and ravagers out ranging and out gunning him. He could have pushed the 2 LR Crusaders up, but I had a god sized unit of wyches with haywire grenades and a unit of scourges with heat lances, which could have made quick work of the LRCs.

Victory for the Boys in Gold and Black.

It was a good game, but also a little bit of a foregone conclusion. One of the things I have noticed about Dark Eldar in 6th is the standard meta just does not apply. Conventional thinking is mech is dead, assault is dead heavy foot armies are the wave of the future. I disagree with this mindset. Dark Eldar vehicles have always been fragile, but with the new glancing rules, they have actually become more durable. Also, factor in the sheer amount of firepower a venom can crank out, without regard to toughness, and a lot of armor saves are being made. I typically average about 4.5 wounds for each venom and I run 6 or 7. Inflicting 30 wounds or so is a lot of wounds. Enough to wipe out a full squad of marines, or at least render non-threatening unless a heavy weapon somehow manages to be the only model left and does not run.

Howdy. I have been getting literally bombed with comments and postings by Anonymous. My poor inbox is getting dozens of emails a day.

So I had had to take some steps to remedy this. Sorry if this is an inconvenience for you guys.

I am going to post a few pictures and updates in the next day or two, as life slows down a bit and allows, but suffice to say I have been crazy busy with work and real life and most of my free time has been devoted to sleep and honey do's. Not a whole lot has been happening.

I have kicked around some Flames of War DAK tanks. I think I have a neat idea for camouflage I want to try and see how it works.

Also going to begin work again on my DE and Silver Skull space marines. Need to get those finished sooner rather than later.

More soon, I promise.

Yeah, its been kind of like that. Work and real life has been insane since my last post. But things are looking a little more positive here over the rest of the year. I will of course be gone periodically for work, but nothing major.

So updates. What have I been doing. To be honest, not much. I went to Wargamescon, made it into the top bracket on Sunday, so I was pretty excited about that. Got best single in Fantasy, and in general had a really good time. I have always liked the effort the guys in Austin put into their convention and it is greatly appreciated. Its the one big event I look forward to every year.

I am hopeful to make some progress on a few things over the next few weeks. I have not done a nice single figure in a long long while, so I will probably do one of those. I have a couple other models to finish for some buddies of mine.

Which goes to another subject, officially, I am not doing commissions anymore. I just don't have the time. I had a gentleman ask me if I would consider working for his studio. While I was flattered, I politley, I hope, declined. To be honest, I am not trying to toot my own horn, but the reality is if I have painted roughly 3 minis in the last year, not even competition minis, just a couple hours each, I don't have time to take one anyone elses work.

That being said, my effort on my Dark Eldar has not gone unnoticed. With 5 minutes here and 10 minutes there I have gotten closer to finishing them. They are still no where near to be done, but I can put them on the gaming table and not be embarrassed.

Here is a picture taken by Frontline Gaming of my army. Thank you for posting this.

It still looks a lot like it did last year, but I finally got my halos on the vehicles. If I am lucky I can be done with this army by the fall.

So in closing, for my faithful followers, lol, expect more frequent updates and hobby progress on my figures over the rest of the year. I am going to finish up some projects, do a few competition level figures, and then possibly start and Space ork army or a Counts as Blood Angel Genestealer cult.Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-32566010510008826712012-03-02T08:38:00.001-06:002012-03-02T08:41:39.884-06:00Angels falling from the heavens

HOWDY

So my buddy Honda and I are talking about doing a Decent of Angels list for doubles at Wargamescon this year for the Doubles tournament.

For my part, I intend to run a Dante list with 2 units of Sanguinary guard, 2 priest and a librarian. A whooping grand total of 14 models.

My buddy Honda is thinking about :
Libby, Jump Pack, Infernus Pistol, with Blood Rage and Sword of Sanguinius
Chaplain, Jump Pack, Infernus Pistol

Sanguinary Priest, Jump Pack, Infernus Pistol, Power Weapon, Melta Bomb
Sanguinary Priest, Jump Pack, Infernus Pistol, Power Weapon, Melta Bomb

RAS x10, Power Fist, Infernus Pistol, x2 Meltaguns
RAS x10, Power Fist, Infernus Pistol, x2 Meltaguns
copied from BNC.

Yes I am fully aware this is a very low model count and we will likely get blown out of the sky.

However, that is really not the point. There a couple of good matchups we could totally exploit and in hand to hand I think we are going to be pretty devastating. But more importantly is the army will look great. With so few models, I can focus on the painting side of them, which is a big part of my I am in wargaming.

I however, an not a huge Blood Angles fan. I've always been a Dark Angels guy at heart, and then Mannus and Dorn, with the great Khan as another I am fond of. So how do I reconcile doing a chapter that has never really appealled to me....

What came to mind were two ways to go, I could to the Flesh Eaters, a BS successor and 3rd founding, or I could do them as Crimson Guard, who are a Crimson Fist Successor, but are red and gold armor.

I think either way could be good, and in the short term it doesn't really matter much since I am fielding Sanguinary Guard, but the painter fluff bunny inside me is screaming in protest for direction. So I have these 2 boxes of guard and no motivation to even clip them off the sprue yet.

Any thoughts?? I would still like to be competitive, as much as I can be with an all jumper list.

I'm going to blog my progress on these over the next few months until the big day.Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-744764884453505922012-02-24T17:06:00.000-06:002012-02-24T17:06:09.524-06:00An Interesting trendHowdy all.

Been crazy busy with work and travel so very very little in the way of updates. I am sure you all realize that already.

Anyway, I have noticed an interesting trend of late. I typically surf the blog sites for what is interesting or amusing to me in the wargame world.

One thing I have noticed more andmore of late, the last 3 or 4 months in particular, is the shift to Warmachine / Hordes. I myself have been building a Cryx and Legion army for playing, along with some flames of war brits. But it seems the rumors of 6th 40K, while interesting, or how the game has shifted and the prices along with it are affecting the gaming community at large.

Personally, I say the more the merrier, 40K is a great little game, but is by no means the end all be all, despite what GW may tell you. I'm also not going to bash GW. They do what they do, and other see an opportunity to capitalize. Some do, some don't. pretty much like everything else out there in the wargame and large market world for all things.

What I wonder, if this trend, if it really is one or my own mind seeing something that really isn't there, is due to a burnout on the current 5th edition, people hating Matt Ward, people hating annual price hikes, or just an older crowd looking for something new and interesting.

In my case, I want to get all my armies painted, but I want to expand into playing FOW and Warmahordes because it looks fun. I'm quite far from saying I am putting all my GW stuff on ebay, but I am just a wee bit burned out on hitting on 3s and wounding on 4s type of thing. Something completely different could be a nice break and rechareg my batteries for later in the year when I get to go to a few tournaments.

Currently, I am planning to go to Wargamescon in Austin, play in the Friday Warmachine blitz and then play in the 40K GT on Sat and Sunday. 3 days on non stop gaming so I can make the long drive back to Houston utterly exhausted with much to talk about.
Anyhoo, not much for updates at the moment, but I hope to have some new photos up in the next day or so.Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-86644051366421138392012-01-01T14:56:00.000-06:002012-01-01T14:56:21.685-06:00HAPPY NEW YEAR! For as long as it lasts

Howdy all and Happy New Year.

Lets hope the Mayans and Al Gore are wrong about the end of the world and a zombie Apocalypse. I would rather look forward to some great games and painting projects instead of the planets lining up and causing Cthulhu to wake up from his nap and devour everyone. Think positive happy thoughts people! Just sayin...

Suffice to say I have been ridiculously busy the last couple of months with work and real life. So much so I have not really had time to do anything hobby related.

However, I did get a little bit of a break right after Christmas, so I started to tackle a couple of projects. I began working again my the Valkya conversion about a year or more behind on. Not to mention the Kugath model which is over 2 years behind. Expect to see some progress on those over the next couple months.

One thing about me is I am really bad about being able to keep up with commissions. With the kids and their activities, work and my lovely wife who can't drive any more, my free time is really eaten up with getting where I or someone else needs to be. its not a big deal, it just takes time.

Still, a little bit of free time and a good podcast to listen too and I'm in hobby heaven. I have almost completed one of my Dark Eldar Venoms. I'm pretty pleased with the way things are turning out with them.

The Skull head is the helmet for the gunner on my venom. I like the look of them. I'll have a finished picture here before too long. Actually, I have one already finished up, just no pictures yet...

I also have picked up a bunch of Necron kits. I don't know exactly when I am going to get to them, since I am still working on my DE, but I have always loved the toasters and I am looking forward to getting them assembled and painted.

One goal I have for this year is to make back to games day to compete again. I have a couple of entries that are in various states of completion which I think will be solid entries. One is a squad of Exorcists Veterans, another is a Goblin Shaman and then there is a really nice looking Theoden single figure. I'm hoping this year I finally get a Gold Demon. A Slayer Sword would be nice too.

I'm also hopeful to go to Reapercon. I think that would be a lot of fun to go and compete, make a few friends and be in one of the premier painting contests in the US.

I'm also planning on heading back to BOLScon / Wargames con or whatever they want to name it this year. I have a lot of fun going and playing games for 3 days non stop. Its tiring, and I am pretty wiped out and can barely speak by the time I am headed back Sunday evening, but it is a lot of fun.Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-53957574966179312952011-10-30T19:56:00.000-05:002011-10-30T19:56:24.966-05:00Something wicked this way comes! Oh My...Howdy all.

It almost Halloween and I have been busy with many projects that are keeping me away from my painting desk, but I do have one little item I did when it came out last year and this is one bad samma jamma.

A Skaven Hellpit Abomination. Now first off let me say I think the original pose is pretty good, but they missed the mark in a bad way when they did the heads. I think they may have been inspired by the 80s version of " The Thing", but epicly failed, in my own opinion.

That being said I went about my own idea of something better, and what I came up with was one large central head that looked vaguely rat like and then a couple little heads off to the side.

Hope you enjoy and please be careful driving out there on Halloween, I won't be the only one out there with my daughters trick or treating and I like for every little kid to have a happy and safe evening out there.
Anyhoo, up for review is the second of my 2 current DE Trueborn units. This unit is made up of females. HOWDY.

Its been crazy busy, but still a I have updates. Everyone loves updates. Up for review is one of my 2 Dark Eldar Trueborn units.

One of the big issues I think all Dark Eldar players have had is what to use as trueborn. Some use the bubble heads, others have used the Incubi heads and others have used different combinations of cloaks, Dark Elf corsiar heads, banners etc...

I wanted to do something a little bit different, so I went with the obvious, I used the Dark Eldar heads from the warriors and wyches box sets. Not very creative or revolutionary I know, but the sculpts are simply amazing and are among the best heads I think GW has every made.

Also, I am really not too keen on payinp upwards of $10 for a blaster bit, so what I did was re-purpose some splinter rifles with the blaster bits from my Reaver jet bikes. I also used sections of the blast pistols in the boxes. I'm actually much happier with the reaver jetbike conversion that the blast pistol. its much easier to do and looks like it fits better, but since I need 12 models with blasters just for my trueborn, and then another 6 at least for my Warriors, I wasn't going to be too picky.

Anyhoo, I broke the first 2 units into male and female units. First unit is the males.

I still need to the bases, but those are on the agenda this weekend along with finishing out 2 of my venoms. I actually have high hopes to get a fair amount of final details done this weekend and start making much better progress on my projects.
Howdy.

I've been busy. I know its hard to believe, but it does happen from time to time. Still, I have some progress to report. Ok not really progress, but pictures of my Dark Eldar Scourges that are almost done.

its kind of sad how much of my Dark Eldar are almost done. My goal is to have my Dark Eldar done by Christmas Holidays. Should be able to pull it off. Maybe not all of my DE, but at least 3K points.

My focus of late has been doing more competition models, so I have been doing a little shopping around for some inspirational figures that I want to paint for the love of painting. I've picked up a couple of Reaper figures and a couple of those Kingdom Death figures that seem to fly off the shelves anytime they are for sale.

I'm also starting to make some progress on the valkya model for my buddy Raymond. I know its may overdue and Raymond's a great guy for being as patient as he has been. Also is the Kugath conversion. So expect to see some progress on those 2 here shortly.

But on to the pictures. Up for review are my Scourges for Dark Edlar. I wanted to keep my desert Dune theme going, so I painted them up with a darker brown armor. Its a mix of GW Scorched brown and Dark Flesh and a tiny bit of black. It initially comes out very dark. Its almost the same as the fabric for my DE warriors. Its washed with thinned GW Asurmen Blue, the BW Devlan Mud and then a thin wash of GW Badab Black. I then apply the base color again and add GW Bubonic Brown to the mix for the highlights.

The weapons are base in GW Chaos Black and then highlighted by adding Hawk turquoise and GW Scaly Green. The color is OOP, but Vallejo makes a good alternative that I use in their Game Color Range.

The skin I wanted darker than my warriors and wyches. base coat is Dwarf Flesh and Dark Flesh, shaded with Devaln mud and Ogryn Flesh and then highlighted with Dwarf flesh and adding GW Elf Flesh to the mix until its where I want it. The flesh was kind of a pain, especially the wings since I used a bit too much water and my wet blending became a wet mess. But it worked out just fine in the end.

The Helmets are the same as my Warrior helmets. Bone, washed with Ogryn Flesh, highlighted with vallejo Desert Sand and Bone White with final highlights of GW Skull White.

Howdy.

So I have finally decided to begin working on my Ostland Empire Army again for Warhammer FB. I was doing fairly well on them about 2 years ago, and then life got complicated and these guys have not seen the light of day since then.

So I have a few WIPS I was last working on since the last time I saw them and a image or two of my spearmen unit so far. I really like the black and white look with the red accent. I intend to add the "red Bull" head to the shields as soon as I can narrow down the exact pattern I want.

if all goes well this weekend I will be working on some more of my Dark Eldar, my Empire and the Valkya conversion.

I'm also going to post my articles on painting Black, White and Red. They are good simple tutorials and this Empire Army is the basis for those articles.

Comments and critique are always welcome.
Howdy. Its back to school day and parents everywhere are rejoicing. Well except for homeschoolers, like us, who view it as Monday. But I digress.

Crazy busy weekend, but I did make a little progress on my venom, sadly no pictures, but those will get up later this week.

For now, unit 2 of my Dark Eldar wyches. They are painted up using the same armor recipe for the warriors.
Base: Tau Sept Ochre
Wash with thinned GW Ogryn Flesh to change the depth of the base color, more like a glaze.
Shade with I Kore Earth, which is a great Dark Red-Brown color
Highlight with a mix of Tau Sept Ocher and and P3 Moldy Ocher.
Final HIghlight using I Kore Desert Sand or Vallajo Sand.

The Body Suit is done with base coat of GW Scorched Brown and Dark Flesh
then its washed with Devlan Mud and then Badab Black
First Highlight is done with GW Dark Flesh, and I gradually add P3 Skorne Red.
Finally a very thin highlight of pure Vallejo Sand is applied to pick out the highlights.

The hair actually took quite a while. The base color is P3 Frostbite, then it is washed with GW Hawk Turquoise. After that I built up the hair color with P3 Frostbite , and then added P3 Morrow White to the mix and finally touched the the most prominent areas and tips with GW skull white.

I'm still trying to get the skin colors right, but for now they are pretty good.

These guys are still a Work on Progress, as are the the first group. I plan to expand them to 10 models each, and then add a 3rd and maybe a fourth unit for a Webway portal army.

One thing I am thinking about doing is doing some you tube videos for a few tutorials. Seems everyone is out there making videos, and a lot of what I do can be much better explained with video than in words.

I'm also going to start selling some painted items from time to time on this site. Not sure who to do that yet, but Ebay is getting a little silly with policies and fees. More on that later.

Anyhoo, your thoughts and opinions are important, so I love to hear what you guys and gals think.Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-69082349735413516652011-08-15T10:51:00.000-05:002011-08-15T10:51:23.185-05:00A Long Weekend and some Updates!

Howdy all. What a long weekend I had with very little progress on the wargaming and hobby front.
We were supposed to have a nice trip to visit family in San Antonio, but my father was sick so we scrapped that. Part of the reason for the trip was I had to go to a coaching clinic in Corpus Christie. So instead of a leisurely 2 hour drive I had a 4 hours drive each way. Sigh...The clinic was not all that great. There was a guy from Nebraska talking about his success in youth football there. I think he should spend a little more time in Texas. Its a whole 'nother critter here. At least I had a couple good podcasts to listen to on the drive. But I digress.

I did get a nice picture of the Aircraft Carrier Lexington. Its huge!

I also took some decent pictures of my Wych unit. I use different hair color to distinguish the different units and I am pretty pleased with the results.

The red does seem a little out of character for the army scheme, but I have to admit I am liking it when they are paired up with the skimmers. its doesn't show up with the warriors so much since they are primarily sand and black, where the wyches are red and sand. Still, I like the overall look and how they all are coming together.

I hope y'all like them.
I need to finish up the bases. I'm not sure if I want to go with a black color sand or sand color sand. I keep waffling back and forth. I am hopeful this week I will get it narrowed down and get these girls finished.Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-29671209951269072242011-08-02T09:12:00.000-05:002011-08-02T09:12:05.100-05:00The Dog Days of Summer....

Howdy, I don't know about you guys, but it is really hot. I mean just sit in the shade and melt hot. Fortunately, the heat has kept me inside and I have been making a little more progress on my Dune inspired Dark Eldar.

One of the things I have developed a real attachment to are venoms. I tell ya, these have got to be the best little transport in the game of 40k ever. They look great, assembled very easily and the rules for them are very well done.

I have been working on one little by little getting some of the colors worked out and adding the black halo to them. The one I have been finalizing is not completely done yet, but it is coming along rather nicely.

There is still quite a bit to do to get this done.Crewmen need to be worked on as do the weapons. The shading needs to be added to a number of areas and the transport section in the back is in dire need of shading and detailwork. But all in all I am rather pleased.

I am confident a few are wondering where I got the name of the Black Halo from, since this is a Dune inspired theme. One of the bands I like a lot is Kamelot. Its a gothic heavy metal band and they did a 2 part concept album/cd or whatever the kids call it nowadays. Download?? Anyhoo, their second album is named The Black Halo and the first song is The March of Mephisto, which if you go to see the video is just dark and sinister in the feel.

Trying to include the march of Mephisto in the theme was going to be a stretch, but the black halo, on my desert background, totally works! For me at least. That and I am a stickler for doing alternative paint schemes on everything. I think if I did Ultramarines I would paint them white or something different.

The other things I am working on are a Valkya conversion which is halfway done. I have the body set up, but I need to add the wings, spear , shield and make the slight body and armor conversions.

Also I am working on a Kugath conversion that is so long overdue its not even funny. Not in the least bit.

It took me the better part of 3 weeks to get this far on the conversions. I have a few more to add and tidy things up and then it is ready for paint. So my end of summer and fall are going to be busy getting all of these things done.

That and I am going to start painting and selling some of my less used or not used armies and figures again. Lots of things I just don't use or have not used in many years are going up for sale. I'm not sure if I will ebay them or try to sell them here. Ebay is getting kind of silly with their fees, but it is a worldwide audience so.... Anyway, stay tuned, there is a lot of things going to be happening here. WOOT!Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-21499783684812342852011-07-20T08:04:00.000-05:002011-07-20T08:04:54.175-05:00Happy Wednesday !Howdy.

So I continue my progress on my DE. I am also adding more interesting blogs that I keep track of.

Also, the house is a wreck. The family is vacationing and I am still here trying to get the honey do's done. Hmmm, so far so good. Still I think I can have most of the mess cleaned up by Friday.

Back on topic. My DE are Dune inspired. I like the Dune books, I'm not a fanatic over them, but they are good and the movies made about them were also I thought, pretty darn good. That being said I went with a basic desert color scheme. Nothing to over the top.

Here is the basic scheme. The first picture is kind of bad. I am still experimenting with exposure and light types and I think I have it nearly figured out as most of my pictures are getting better results.

Anyhoo, overall I am liking what I have here and I am working to get all my DE done before the end of the year. its a tall order, but I think with steady progress I can have it all complete.

The basic colors are for the armor are GW Tausept Ochre. I then shade with GW Orgyn Flesh. I don't really use the wash much other than to help set the tone for the undercoat. Next is a wet blend mix of I kore's Earth color, which is a nice dark red brown color, similar to a mix of GW Scorched Brown and Dark flesh, and Tau sept Ochre. The final highlight is I Kore Meridian Sand. There is no real GW equivalent, but it would a mix of Bubonic Brown and Bleach bone and Skull white.

You could also use Vallejo Pale Sand, the problem here is that Pale sand has low saturation and does not pop very much when compared to the GW colors, or I should say as the final highlight it is less vibrant than the colors it is trying to highlight.

The Helmet is bleached bone, washed with GW Orgyn Flesh and then shaded with very thinned down I Kore Earth. Next the helmet bleached bone is mixed with P3 Moldy Ochre to get a yellowish tone, then is highlighted with skull white.

The weapons are done with Snakebite Leather shaded withe badaab Black and highlighted by adding Moldy Ochre to the Snakebite leather.

All in all it takes about 3 hours per figure. What's weird is I have not hit a burnout yet. I really enjoy painting this army, the more I do , the more I want to work on. I forgot who said it, but this really is a painters army. it is dynamic, has lots of interesting details and just plain looks cool as all get out when it is done.

Here is one of my venom WIPS

These little things are a absolute blast to play with. They zip around, shot lots of shots and just plain look really cool. I love these! As you can tell, they paint up very nicely and look good pretty much no matter what you do with them. GW has done its part to release some really ugly or lack luster models over the years, but these have got to be one of the best kits they have ever made. Good job design team!Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-49192517622687275902011-07-15T15:49:00.000-05:002011-07-15T15:49:08.179-05:00Howdy all.

Not much happening this week. Lots of things to catch up one and finish up. I have a Valkiya model I am converting over finally for a friend and a Kugath that needs finishing up.

I was listening to some music and talking to a few friends about what kind of music would be good for our armies. Since I am currently playing dark eldar, one of my favorite bands came to mind.

Five Finger Death Punch. Its hard and to the point.

I like this song soI figured I'd share.

Sorry for the lack of posts, but with football season rolling into championships and me getting things in life in order I have not had a lot of free time.

I know it only takes a few minutes to post something, but... well I am not to good of late on posting.

Anyhoo, that being said, I have been working hard to get my Dark Eldar painted in time for Wargamescon in Austin. As it was, I still had to proxy 3 figures and 2 guys did'nt have heads. I will take some good pictures of my guys later for ya'll to take a look at.

For the weekend I ran my 2000 paint "Black Halo" list. It still needs a few tweaks to get it clicking everytime all the time, but what I ran was

a succubus with agonizer and haywire grenades

2 haemonculi with liquifier guns

2 units of 4 trueborn with blasters and in a venom with dual splinter cannons and night shields

2 units of 5 warriors with a blasters in a venom with dual splinter cannons and night shields

2 units of 5 warriors with a shredder in a venom with dual splinter cannons and night shields

3 ravagers with flicker fields.

overall I went 3 & 1 day one and missed the top bracket by 2 points, next day I went 2 and 1.

I am pleased with how everything went for the most part, but I am thinking I need something more and I will be experimenting with my army over the next few months to get it where I want it to be.

Its good to be back home though and I am glad I have a couple days of vacation to rest and recover.

Oh, and I almost forgot, I won best single in the Sci-fi category of the paintging contest. Nice to get top honors in the toughest contest category. Thanks all.

So much so I will do my best to document my progress as I work on things.

I initially had in mind to do a desert type themed army, but the more I looked at it I had a lot of trouble coming up with something I liked. I painted one up in black with red accents and I am pretty pleased with it, but one of my best buddies convinced to try the desert theme again. I have a warrior I am working on and then I will decide which f the two I like best and go with that.Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18497161.post-51282932237846437242011-02-24T07:49:00.000-06:002011-02-24T07:49:09.788-06:00Updates from the frontHowdy. Its been busy since last time I posted.

So where are we. I have assembled a Rhino for my Imperial Paladins Space marines, which look a lot like Black Templars. Chapter symbol is almost the same, but has a skull in the center of the cross. Along with this I have recycled 20 marines I picked up a few years ago, cleaned them and they are waiting for priming.

I have assembled 15 Iron Hands marines. There is a bitmore work involved with these guys so they go a little slower. One of the things I want to do with them is remove all imperial aquilas ( chest eagles or wings) from them. I like them to still be bitter towards the emporers children and shun things that remind them of their most hated brothers. I know fluff or otherwise mentions nothing about this, but its my army. :)

Another thing I have done is begin to work on some Flames of War models. One of the things I hate most about FOW is the barrels of the tanks always seem to get bent, then the paint flakes off, or the barrel just falls off because the glue does ot have enough strength to hold it in place. Pinning does'nt really work well either, so I came up with a neat alternative. I replace the entire barrel with brass tubing. its much stronger, and making the barrel a little longer I can pin the bareel into the turret and get a strong solid fix for one of my buga-boos.
I dug out a small squad of Iron Hands I did several years ago. This is the basic paint scheme I have in mind. I won't use to much of the bionics from GW, but I will modify most of mine to maintain the improvements they make for themselves.

I really like the gear pattern I have all over and want to continue it as this army progresses. I am at this point, hoping they will be done and ready to go by BOLScon end of summer. This may seem like a ton of time, but I have 4 children, all of who play football year round and I coach them, so I spend a fair amount of my time on a field somewhere here in Houston. Its all good, just takes away from toy soldier time is all.

I also have my dark eldar, which I am going to be working on little by little as well, and my Empire army and some FOW and Warmachine. And..And..And...

I know, its a lot, but since I don't really have any deadlines other than those I make for myself, it will all get done when it gets done. :)Mondel "GAR" Garciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06375929480492403553noreply@blogger.com3
